The Ability to Resist Corrosion

The ability to resist corrosion is one of the most obvious differences between the two grades. While both types of steel contain iron elements that oxidize when exposed to the environment, stainless steel has more chromium. This property allows stainless steel to resist corrosion better between the two. The presence of chromium, after all, leads to the creation of a chromium oxide layer that protects the steel from degradation and corrosion. If corrosion resistance is a key factor in your project, then stainless steel is the best option for your project.

Different Mechanical Properties

Carbon and stainless steel have different grades and types that all contain different mechanical properties. In general, however, stainless steel contains larger amounts of nickel, making them more ductile than carbon. On the other hand, carbon steel, which has a high amount of carbon (at least 0.30% by weight), is more heat-ready than stainless steel.

Appearance and Cost

One must consider steel type when the project requires a particular aesthetic appeal. After polishing, stainless steel and carbon can have a bright, shiny look, but carbon steel may need a fresh coat of paint after the polishing process to resist corrosion. For this reason, stainless steel is often more expensive than carbon. Apart from its rust-resistant properties, it also contains a variety of elements, such as nickel, chromium, and manganese. If you’re on a tight budget but still want quality, durable materials, then you may want to opt for carbon in your next project.
